Built to Spec

It's time for Matt and Emma to put together the components they've been building, with the help of some spare parts. What will get them out of this room?

Components

Note: The twins can only use components they've built. It's possible that Matt and Emma haven't built the right set of components, and won't be able to construct anything at all.

Eight horizontal bars in a vertical stack. Each one has many small even holes and fades out to the left and right. The middle six bars are gray, but the top and bottom are white on the left and black on the right with a colored band in the middle. The top bar has a red band, with a white letter I to its left and a black letter R to its right. The bottom bar has a purple band, with a white letter U to its left and a black letter V to its right.

Forty small pieces with different irregular shapes and all about the same size. Half of them are colored black and half are colored white, mixed evenly. Each piece has one letter on it.
